Killer Kitchener Buns (done in the Camp Oven)

A recipe from Nicole Pilmore, from the story Camp Oven Treats from Cook Out Back

  • 2 (½) cups flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3 heaped tablespoons sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • 1 ¼ cups warm milk
  • Rind of 1 lemon
  • Super fry vegetable oil
  • Caster sugar
  • Jam and whipped cream to serve

Mix together – Mix into flour – Knead – Rise – Shape into buns – Rise – Fry in hot oil – 1 min 20 seconds each side. Drain and roll in castor sugar split in halves and fill with jam and cream.

We used a small camp oven for these and did them one at a time to make it easier to control the heat. The oil is around the right temperature when a bread cube takes about 1 min to colour golden.
