So… you have heard a rumour about a food book being written, edited and compiled by a group of writers and creatives of the Flinders Ranges region? Well… it’s true! The project has involved local writers, photographers, cooks and community members.

It was commenced in 2009 and is already nearly two years in the making. The stories document many important foods and recipes of the region and chronicles their evolution and significance … from bush tucker, settlers’ fare and local produce, right through to innovative cooking and growing techniques for the arid region.

Every Dish Tells A Story recognizes that your food is so much more than just what you put in your mouth… you’re also getting a taste of life, culture and maybe a bit of history too. In fact if you’ve ever shared a favourite recipe, you’ve probably also shared where it came from and just why you love making it… and that story is part of what makes that food taste good to you and yours.

We have collected stories and accompanying recipes from residents of the central Flinders Ranges in South Australia, showing the many different ways that the food of our region reflects our unique environment, heritage and our way of life here.

And we are making films from these stories too, via the Film Maker in Residence project in 2009 and 2010. In 2011 the film making project extends to involve local schools.
